Update: stopping the old RH 9 brings down the loopback interface :(,
on host and everywhere. Cannot ping localhost on host or 127.0.0.1.

Disabling /etc/init.d/network in vserver helps. However, this should not
be possible. I guess my kernel has something enabled that shouldn't be.
