try to configure the tools with the following
./configure line instead (after you uninstalled
the currently installed ones wit e.g. make uninstall)

./configure --prefix=/usr --sysconfdir=/etc --localstatedir=/var --with-vrootdir=/vservers

then please try again ...

rationale: we found a very strange bug, which
makes tools configured with --prefix=/ act like
drunk ...
