The startup script (/etc/init.d/rc) is trying to query /dev/console for its
width and height with something like:

test -z "$CONSOLE" && CONSOLE=/dev/console
set -- $(stty size < $CONSOLE)
  LINES=$1
COLUMNS=$2
export LINES COLUMNS CONSOLE

I think I put in a quick and nasty work around by changing /dev/console to
/dev/tty
