Well, /etc/postfix/master.cf might state other limits.

Can you reproduce/force the issue? If so, you can always try and do an
'strace' and see what actually fails.

I'd assume the error message is wrong/incomplete.

To my knowledge, VServer doesn't limit you more than ulimit would limit
