As suggested, I have experimented with the kernel and have found that when I
do "yum install kernel", grub.conf is modified correctly, but the centos
will not run on the new version of the kernel, it crashes on startup. I
have the following in grub.conf

title CentOS (2.6.32-220.4.1.el5.vs2.

        root (hd0,0)

        kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.32-220.4.1.el5.vs2. ro

        initrd /initrd-2.6.32-220.4.1.el5.vs2.

Is there a specific kernel I should use??
