Thanks for all the encouragement and offered help.

With the vserver-sources-2.3.0.36.32 and util-vserver-0.30.216_pre2910
now in portage all I needed was an "emerge -u world" and recompiling the
kernel with
     * CONFIG_RESOURCE_COUNTERS=y
     * CONFIG_CGROUP_MEM_RES_CTLR=y
     * CONFIG_CGROUP_MEM_RES_CTLR_SWAP=y
to solve the "vc_rlimit_stat(RLIMIT_AS): Invalid argument" on vserver-stat.

Worked like a charm.

Unfortunately I didn't need to learn anything new ;)

The only thing that didn't work was the "Oxford OX16PCI958 multiport
card". Seems our card was defunct. We now solved it in another way; but
that still needed the vserver accessing (now) USB ports on the host.
