Something strange is still going on, though:

connection works for a while, then gets droppen.

eugen@nitrogen:~$ Read from remote host Connection reset by peer
Connection to closed.
eugen@oxygen:~$ ssh -l eugen
ssh: connect to host port 22: Connection refused

Reconnect is no longer possible. Ping is very high (this
is all on the same switch).

eugen@oxygen:~$ ping
PING ( 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from icmp_seq=1 ttl=30 time=36.9 ms
64 bytes from icmp_seq=2 ttl=30 time=36.7 ms

...ah, it's the Tyan IPMI module. It's colliding with the address. I've set eth1 to a different address,
and now all is working.
