hmm, interesting, both are naming schemes which we
probably didn't anticipate ...
anyway here some infos/clarifications:
- using the legacy setup (1.2x and alias mode for 2.x)
the alias will be named ethX:<name> and each additional
interface alias will get a number added (e.g. ethX:<name>1)
- using the new style config you will not get any alias
and the ips will 'just' be added to the interface
(you can see them with ip addr ls)
the name displayed with ifconfig is only half the truth
as it display only the first 9 characters of the interface
or alias name, but the kernel stores a total of 15 or so
(so checking with 'ip addr ls' might give a better insight)
