The block should stay removed as mentioned in a previous post. I fixed
the howto accordingly.

The best way to test kernels is using lilo with the setboot option to
force booting a specified kernel for one reboot only. If that doesn't
come up as expected, just remote-powercylce it (since your server is
hosted at a real ISP, you do have that option, do you..?) and be back at
the working setup.
