How about perl packages? They are typically not RPM based and though
there is cpan2rpm I've had it fail certain package installations that
even failed when using perl -MCPAN and I ended up installing them from
tarballs. Not something I want to do more than once.

   My thoughts where to get a vserver working with the updates etc. then
to an rsync (which, if I understand correctly, means I can update the
reference vserver) followed by vunify. Other than the suggestions of
taking three rsync passes and the last with the vserver not running (this
from a probably very old message thread) is there other issues?
