correct, but that is only half the truth,
you need to specify -p1 inside the kernel
tree, you could do this in one command line

assumed you are in /usr/src/linux-2.4.22
and the patch is in /usr/src, you would issue

zcat ../patch-2.4.22-vs1.00.diff.gz | patch -p1
