Yes, to late !!!

If someone thinks that moving it all to python would
be a good idea - I would love to help.

I think not running services on the main server is a good idea but
can not see a problem in having perl or pyhton installed.

The best possible development environment should be used
to make fast progress and a stable system.

That said, I have found that I like more to make changes to
shell scripts than Perl, more often I do not understand Perl.
