there never was such a limit (AFAIK), but you will
only see the first 4 characters in ifconfig, but there
is a maximum length for the device name (15), which
leaves 10 characters for vserver names ...

longer names will be cut, and collision can occur,
if the first 10 characters are the same ...

# ifconfig eth1:ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ 10.99.99.1
# ifconfig

eth1:ABCD Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:02:B3:BF:A2:64
          inet addr:10.99.99.1 Bcast:10.255.255.255 Mask:255.0.0.0
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1

# ip addr show

4: eth1: <BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP> mtu 1500 qdisc pfifo_fast qlen 100
    inet 10.99.99.1/8 brd 10.255.255.255 scope global eth1:ABCDEFGHIJ

Herbert
