I have an idea as to what could have gone wrong here.
My guess is that because the RH was installed on a i686 machine
(Celeron) RedHat installed some i686 optimized packages (they do have a
few :-) - I'm going to try and install it directly on my spare partition
on the server (means downtime :-( ) and see if that makes it work
better..

I'll let you know.
